How to clean your garbage disposal
When you think about cleaning your home you probably forget about the garbage disposal in your sink like most of us tend to do, but did you know it is extremely important to keep it clean. A dirty garbage disposal can attract fruit flies not to mention grow mold and mildew from left over food particles. Yuck! Now you might be asking yourself how you should go about cleaning it. Can’t you just pour some bleach down the drain? Nope! It is important to remember to avoid ammonia, bleach, or any abrasive cleaners on steel as it can damage it. So how should you properly clean your garbage disposal? Well the answer is below:
1.Sprinkle about 1/2 cup of baking soda down the disposal then add one cup of white vinegar. This mixture will fizz and make a bit of noise (remember the volcano science project in school when you mixed the two together). Allow this mixture to sit for about 10 min while you boil some hot water. Now pour the boiling water down the drain. This helps to soften any food stuck in the drain.
2.Next fill the drain with about 2 cups of ice. Pour a cup of salt (rock salt is great if you have it, but you can also use coarse sea salt) over the ice cubes. Run the cold water and turn on the garbage disposal until the ice is gone. This ice/salt mixture will help to loosen the food debris from the grinding elements.
3.Finally, cut lemon or lime in half. With the water on and garbage disposal running add the fruit halves one at a time into the disposal. The fruit will help to clean and deodorize your drain.
